Katten Muchin Rosenman LLP announced today that Steven C. Mindy has joined the firm as a partner on the Employee Benefits and Executive Compensation team, part of Katten’s Transactional Tax Planning practice, in its Washington, DC office.

“Steven’s vast experience in guiding clients through sophisticated transactions, ensuring that they are in compliance with tax, employee benefits, and data privacy law requirements, among others, will bolster our capabilities and further strengthen our team,” said Katten Chairman Roger P. Furey.

Mindy regularly advises employers, insurance companies and other benefit plan service providers on the compliance issues associated with a wide range of employee benefit plan types, including group health plans, health savings accounts (HSAs), wellness programs, flexible spending accounts (FSAs) and transportation fringe benefits. He also advises employer groups on the rules governing association health plans and multiple employer welfare arrangements (MEWAs), and counsels clients on the operation of voluntary employees’ beneficiary associations (VEBAs).

He has extensive knowledge of the privacy and security laws and regulations that impact benefit plans, including HIPAA’s privacy and security requirements, helping HIPAA-covered entities comply with breach and security incident notification requirements under that privacy law and others.

Mindy is a known quantity to the Katten team, having spent the early years of his career working closely with Employee Benefits partner Kate Ulrich Saracene. Saracene is thrilled to be reunited with Mindy, explaining, “Since joining Katten in 2017, it has been my objective to grow the health and welfare benefits practice, and a key part of that strategy was to convince Steve to join our team. His extensive knowledge of health and welfare plans and the vendors that service that industry deepens our bench strength, and demonstrates Katten’s commitment to becoming a leader in this area.”

Mindy’s experience includes years serving as a federal law enforcement officer and is valuable when representing plans and employers during investigations and audits before federal and state agencies.Additionally, Mindy has handled litigation related to the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) and other laws that regulate benefit plans. He also has a niche practice counseling financial institutions, insurance companies and nonbank trustees onHSA matters.

Mindy is the third attorney to join Katten’s Employee Benefits and Executive Compensation team in the last six months, following the recent additions of partner Victoria Rosamond and special counsel Lisa Christensen, both based in Katten’s New York office.
