Katten Muchin Rosenman LLP announced today that Matthew Sperry is the newest member of the Trusts and Estates department at the firm, which recently was named by U.S. News – Best Lawyers® as Law Firm of the Year in Trusts & Estates Law.

“Matthew’s deep experience in handling the complex legal needs of international clients will only strengthen this already esteemed group of attorneys, all of them industry leaders highly regarded for their full understanding of evolving estate and tax laws and effective wealth preservation strategies,” said Katten Chairman Roger P. Furey.

Sperry counsels individuals and families, family offices and trust companies around the world on the tax, structuring, compliance and business issues encountered when they interact with the United States. He has extensive experience designing and implementing integrated wealth management structures that solve for global taxation challenges, privacy, wealth transfer and succession, family governance, asset protection and information reporting management and compliance (such as under the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA) and the global common reporting standards (CRS)). Sperry’s client base extends to China, India, Africa, Latin America, the Middle East, Europe and Canada.

Previously, Sperry led the global private client practice at McGuireWoods and served as a federal law clerk to Judge Carolyn P. Chiechi, who retired last year from the US Tax Court in Washington, DC. He is a frequent speaker and author on the taxation of private clients and trusts, global family governance, cross-border wealth structuring and other key private client issues.

“Whether it’s complex cross-border tax matters, globalwealth structuring issues or family direct investing programs, Matthew is an attorney who understands his clients’ needs and can develop practical solutions tailored to meet their goals,” said Joshua S. Rubenstein, national head of the firm’s Trusts and Estates practice and national chair of the Private Client Services group. “As a client advocate, Matthew has an excellent track record of outstanding work and providing personal attention, extraordinary service and the utmost privacy — all qualities Katten’s clients value. We are thrilled that he will expand our international private client capabilities.”
