DHG Strengthens its Team, Culture and Future Leaders through Volunteerism

5/30/19

Dixon Hughes Goodman LLP (DHG), a U.S. top 20 public accounting and advisory firm, hosted its annual DHG Leadership Conference for accounting college students this month and will soon be launching its 8th annual Count the Cans food drive June 14-24, both emphasizing the importance of volunteering to support local communities. The emphasis on volunteerism is a catalyst to strengthen team comradery, culture and leadership at the firm and in the communities DHG serves.

At the DHG Leadership Conference, students volunteered through a hands-on charitable outreach activity by assembling “Birthday Presents For All” to distribute to children and families through nonprofit agency, Thompson, a charity that supports behavioral and educational treatment care for children throughout the Carolinas. Students worked in teams to wrap toys and supplies for children and families, all the while strengthening their bond as a team and learning to be rising leaders in the accounting profession.

“We emphasize the importance of volunteerism with the DHG Leadership Conference student attendees and with our people through strategic volunteer opportunities. Giving back builds a special common bond and strengthens engagement, which in turn strengthens DHG’s overall culture and impact in our local communities," said Akilah Garvin, DHG IMPACT Manager.

As part of its focus on volunteerism, DHG launches its eighth annual food drive, Count the Cans, to fight hunger during the summer months and make a purposeful impact on the firm's local communities. Over the 10-day campaign, DHG staff and partners will participate in a friendly inter-office competition to inspire team members to volunteer and support local food banks. Last year DHG donated more than $76,000 to hunger relief organizations in addition to volunteering nearly 1,000 service hours at local food banks. Over the past seven years, DHG has donated an average of 100,000 pounds of food per year through the annual Count the Cans campaign.

This fall, DHG will announce its 2019 Community IMPACT Award winners, recognizing the outstanding volunteerism and community impact by a DHG employee and collective efforts of team members in a DHG location.
