New Vegan Eatery Boosts Leasing Activity to 12 Retailers Overall Year-to-Date

ATCO Properties & Management, an owner and operator of high-quality office, residential and mixed-use properties across the U.S., and developer of Camp North End in partnership with Shorenstein Properties LLC, announced today that it has finalized a lease for vegan food purveyor Plant Joy at the site’s Keswick Avenue food stalls, further accelerating retail leasing activity at the site.

With the new commitment by Plant Joy, ATCO has successfully secured 12 new retail tenants at Camp North End year-to-date. The other new tenants include Chef Greg Collier’s newest restaurant, Leah & Louise, gourmet bakery Wentworth & Fenn, taproom Free Range Brewing, specialty cocktail company Black Moth Bars, frozen dessert stand Popbar, Raydal Hospitality’s La Caseta, Bleu Barn Bistro, Nagahama-style noodle shop SARU by Bow Ramen, used bookstore That’s Novel Books, specialty paper good shop Good Postage, and boutique fitness concept bloc.

Plant Joy, which specializes in locally-sourced, organic vegan cuisine, is the brainchild of Charlotte-based chef Julia Simon, known for her vegan catering company Nourish and her partner, Erik Berns. The menu will celebrate all things natural and vegetable-based, including standouts like socca (chickpea crepe), Rainbow Toast, vegan croissants and falafel stacks. The food stall will be Plant Joy’s first brick-and-mortar location and is expected to open November 2020.

On their decision to set up shop at Camp North End, Chef Simon commented: “We’ve enjoyed a presence on campus as passionate supporters of and vendors at Goodyear Arts, and are happy to call many of the businesses open now friends and sisters. The team also impressed us as they advocated for already-open businesses when discussing our offerings and operations, as we firmly believe in community not competition. We’re happy to be surrounded by friends, as well, since Bleu Barn is a fellow Piedmont Culinary Guild member, and La Caseta’s owner, Dalton, is an old friend of Chef Julia/Nourish. We know the SARU crew and our team will become best buds in no time!”

Tommy Mann, Development Director at Camp North End, added: “We are excited to welcome Plant Joy to Camp North End, which marks our 12th retail tenant at the site and fourth restaurant to join the exciting Keswick food stall line-up this year. Even in spite of the pandemic, the success of our retail businesses is a testament to Camp North End’s community atmosphere, access to fresh air and outdoor amenities, as well as our commitment to bring the best local talent to the neighborhood.”

Other tenants at Camp North End include Ally Bank innovation team TM Studio; nonprofit Junior Achievement of Central Carolinas; arts organization Goodyear Arts; coffee company Hex Coffee Roasters; design consulting firm Wily; interactive gallery and creative studio space Blk Mrkt; boutique hair salon eXplicit Salon; creative studio and art gallery DUPP&SWAT; contemporary art and home décor designer Windy O’Connor; coworking space Hygge Coworking; and custom motorcycle parts company Prism Supply. The campus also houses a set of industrial users.

In addition to its leasing successes over the last year, Camp North End has received multiple industrywide recognitions for its excellence in design and innovative adaptive re-use methods. In August 2020, The Gama Goat Building was awarded Engineering News-Record’s (ENR) 2020 Southeast Best Renovation Project Award, named a finalist for the Charlotte Business Journal’s 2020 Heavy Hitter Commercial Real Estate Awards, and earlier this year, Camp North End was one of the first four developments in North America to receive Fitwel Community Certification from the Center for Active Design (CfAD), a national building standard that focuses on optimizing holistic health benefits in neighborhood-scale projects.

Chapman Chastain with Ascent represented ATCO in the transaction, while Plant Joy had no outside tenant representation. A Cushman & Wakefield team led by Jessica Brown, David Dorsch and Grant Keyes are the exclusive leasing agents for the office component of the property.
