Duke Energy’s foundation has doled out $522,400 in grants for environmental projects in North Carolina, the company announced on Tuesday.

The Duke Energy Foundation, which donates $30 million annually to charity, provided the grants to 22 North Carolina-based organizations to protect and restore wildlife and natural resources.

“We’re pleased to support projects that protect and expand access to North Carolina’s natural treasures, especially as more people are engaged in outdoor activities,” Stephen De May, Duke Energy’s North Carolina President, said in a statement.

Asheville Greenworks, a community-based nonprofit, will be a recipient putting funds towards its Everybody’s Environment program to promote racial equality in the environmental field. The program has grown over the past years due to previous funding from the Duke Energy Foundation.

“GreenWorks and many other environmental and conservation organizations in western North Carolina have been working together as part of Everybody’s Environment to advance racial equity in our organizations and programs. The recent nature grant from the Duke Energy Foundation helps to build our capacity to effect meaningful change in equity, diversity and inclusivity in the environmental field,” Dawn Chavez, executive director of Asheville GreenWorks, said in the release.
