Epic Games Acquires SuperAwesome

Epic Games, the Cary-based developer of popular online video game Fortnite, announced on Friday that it acquired SuperAwesome, a “kid tech” company focused on making the internet safer for children.

SuperAwesome’s products include “Kids Web Services” (KWS), a parental consent management toolkit for developers to build digital experiences for users of all ages, and “AwesomeAds,” a tool that allows developers to monetize kid-safe ads.

SuperAwesome is used by more than 300 brands, including LEGO, NBC Universal and Hasbro. Its services reach more than 500 million kids every month. SuperAwesome will continue supporting existing customers after the acquisition, the release noted.

“The internet was never designed for kids so we started SuperAwesome to make it as easy as possible to enable safe, privacy-driven digital experiences for children everywhere. Partnering with Epic Games gives us the opportunity to deliver that promise on a scale which simply wouldn’t have been possible on our own,” SuperAwesome CEO and cofounder Dylan Collins said in a statement.

The financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
