Former Atrium Health General Counsel Brings Over Two Decades of Health Care Experience

Moore & Van Allen PLLC is pleased to announce that Keith A. Smith will be joining the Firm’s Health Care Team as a Member on September 1, 2020. A highly regarded health care lawyer, Smith is the former executive vice president and general counsel of Atrium Health, where he worked for 22 years.

At Moore & Van Allen, Smith will work closely with Health Care Team leaders Carol Bowen and Don Meyer to strengthen and grow MVA’s Health Care practice. “We are honored to welcome Keith to Moore & Van Allen,” said Firm Chairman Tom Mitchell. “I have known Keith for 27 years and he is a person of impeccable character and great integrity. A key member of the senior leadership team at Atrium Health, Smith managed the legal affairs and led an 18-attorney team for a $7 billion health system with more than 35,000 employees and a full spectrum of healthcare services. Smith was responsible for corporate compliance, audit services, privacy, enterprise risk management, corporate risk management and insurance programs, and he chaired the Atrium Health Enterprise Risk Management Executive Committee and Employees Political Action Committee for many years.

Smith has extensive experience overseeing strategic transactions and corporate governance and was responsible for developing the joint operating company structure used by Atrium Health to facilitate growth and strategic combinations as well as the formation of Atrium Health’s investment oversight committee. Smith also led complex, high-stakes litigation and government investigations work at Atrium Health, including the successful defense of government antitrust litigation on an issue of first impression and the management of multiple federal and state government investigations and inquiries.

An active member of the community, Smith has served on several boards and committees, including the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Charlotte, the Carolina Thread Trail and the Dowd YMCA.

Smith earned his B.A., with honors, and J.D., with honors, from Duke University.
