Housing costs are the largest expense for the average American family and can be particularly burdensome for residents in major U.S. cities where the cost of living tends to be higher.

In a new study, SmartAsset analyzed data on the 50 most-populated U.S. cities to find where residents spend the most on housing. We considered two metrics: median monthly housing costs and housing costs as a percentage of income.

Out of the 50 most-populous U.S. cities, Charlotte ties with two other cities for the 24th spot in SmartAsset’s study on where people spend the most on housing, with median monthly housing costs ($1,178) making up 23.26% of local household income. Raleigh ranks 38th, with median monthly housing costs ($1,178) making up 21.52% of local household income.
