Well-regarded insurance leader joins company to elevate risk management assessment

JAG Insurance Group (JAG) – a South Florida-based commercial insurance agency with offices in Coral Gables, Delray Beach and Charlotte, N.C. – announced today that Leo Portes has joined the firm as chief insurance officer.

Portes joins JAG with a solid industry reputation, having built his career on a high level of expertise in claims, litigation and risk management. As a critical element to elevating the insurance practice, he will oversee loss prevention for company clients, including the evaluation of risks and minimizing exposure. This will allow clients to reduce potential losses and improve asset structure from an underwriting perspective. Portes will also evaluate daily management of internal processes at JAG, working hand-in-hand with the company’s various teams to identify avenues for business advancement.

Portes brings 22 years of insurance industry experience to the company, most recently serving as Claims Advocacy Senior Lead at Alliant Insurance Services. Here, he worked to ensure that a policy delivered what it promised to his clients, which included visiting with leadership and producers in sales presentations, renewals, and stewardship meetings.

Portes’ career launched at Gainsco Insurance, where he quickly achieved success and culminated his role as a company supervisor. Following Gainsco, he continued to hold senior-level positions within the insurance industry and then as a senior risk manager with University of Miami. Portes then served as director of claims P&C with Crystal & Company as director of claims P&C; the company was subsequently acquired by Alliant.

Portes holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Florida International University.
