Camp North End Continues Leasing Spree With Three New Food & Retail Tenants

12/2/19

ATCO Properties & Management, developer of Camp North End in partnership with Shorenstein Properties LLC, an owner and operator of high-quality office, residential and mixed-use properties across the U.S., announced today that it has finalized three additional leases at the site, further strengthening its status as one of the city’s most up-and-coming dining, retail and entertainment destinations.

The new tenants, which will offer everything from hand-cut noodles, farm-to-table fare, and gourmet desserts, will bring a variety of newcomers and local favorites to the North End’s dining scene. They include Bow Ramen and Bleu Barn Bistro, which will set up shop on Keswick Avenue where the street cuts through the Gama Goat Building, and Wentworth & Fenn, which will be located at The Bunkhouse at the Mount. All three food stalls are expected to open in March 2020.

In addition to the new commitments by Bow Ramen, Bleu Barn Bistro and Wentworth & Fenn, construction is ongoing at 301 Camp Road, the future home of James Beard award semifinalist chef Greg Collier’s new restaurant concept, Leah & Louise, and taproom Free Range Brewing. Both restaurants have set target opening dates of March 2020.

In total, Camp North End will now have eight food & beverage establishments across the one million square-foot complex. Among its other notable culinary tenants include loose-leaf tea bar Birch Fine Tea, healthy food purveyor Chop & Chisel, and coffee bar Hex Coffee Roasters.

“By curating a mix of culinary talent at Camp North End, we are creating a dynamic dining destination in Charlotte’s burgeoning North End,” said Damon Hemmerdinger, co-president of ATCO Properties & Management. “It's not just about food, it's about new, unexpected experiences and organic interactions and connections with other people that are good for the community—and will lead to happier, healthier, more productive employees for our office tenants as well.”

Bow Ramen’s Nagahama-style ramen shop, totaling 385 square feet, will be its first location outside of New York City. Co-founder and executive Chef Kimitaka Terashita's authentic Japanese menu includes rice bowls, pork belly buns, and ramen made from scratch daily.

According to Shintaro Yamada, Co-Founder at Bow Ramen, Nagahama ramen is a popular type of ramen originally developed at Fukuoka City Central Wholesale Fish Market in Fukuoka, Japan. The soup is made from pork bone and cooked over high heat, which releases bone marrow into the broth for additional flavor. It is served with ultra-thin noodles. “The soup has a light taste but it has richness and a lot of umami in it,” he says. “It's definitely a different style of tonkotsu ramen in United States. We are so happy to open our Nagahama Ramen shop in Charlotte – it is a must try!"

Bleu Barn Bistro is a food truck establishing it first brick-and-mortar location in Charlotte. Its new space will span 385 square feet and focus on farm-to-table cuisine with a rotating seasonal menu of grab and go breakfast items, hot and cold sandwiches, tacos, salads, specials, appetizers, and sides.

“Bleu Barn Bistro is excited to expand into our first brick and mortar location, and join the already awesome family at Camp North End,” said Tara and Brenton Ebersold, owners of Bleu Barn Bistro. “We are ready to showcase our new and improved culinary view point while still focusing on our core values. Sourcing locally, sustainably, and seasonally while following eco-friendly business practices and providing an ethical business environment for our team to grow into. We feel like we have finally found a new home for BBB to expand into, and our business practices fit in well at Camp North End. Our current followers can expect the awesome food and customer service offered from the food truck, with a new Camp North End twist. BBB Camp North End will eventually serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Expect to find your seasonal favorites, plus new and creative menu items.”

Wentworth & Fenn was founded by James Beard Award nominee and former Executive Pastry Chef for The Fig Tree restaurant, Samantha Allen, and her business partner Cassie Allen. Its new 750 square-foot space at Camp North End will be used primarily for production and tastings for clients, with room to grow into a retail presence for custom cakes, pastries, and baked goods.

Allen commented: “Camp North End is the major next step for Wentworth & Fenn to showcase the next phase of the business. In addition to Selma, our mobile bakery, events can be thrown at the new space complete with pastries and cake. It will also double as the official tasting room. Being closer and more convenient to Charlotte is imperative for our clients and patrons. Camp North End is the perfect spot nestled right outside of uptown. Cheers to an exciting beginning!”

The new deals are the result of the ongoing, building-wide redevelopment at the Gama Goat Building, a 140,000 square-foot creative office property that is currently undergoing a major renovation. When completed in 2020, the property will feature passageways that will cut through the building to connect with cross-streets in the Lockwood neighborhood, creating new east-west connectivity through the site and the broader North End corridor. These new streets will be lined with small spaces for ground floor retail, food and beverage and four-season outdoor patios, forming the beginning of a central pedestrian “spine” that will tie together massive warehouses across 75 acres. It is being designed by New York-based architectural firm S9 Architecture, Charlotte-based BB+M Architecture as the local production architect, and civil engineer LandDesign.

The Gama Goat Building is one of six buildings that ATCO and Shorenstein are adaptively reusing at Camp North End. Other projects currently underway include the redevelopment of 1701 N. Graham Street and 301 Camp.

Evelyn Adelman (Ascent) represented the landlord in all three transactions. A team from Cushman & Wakefield, led by Jessica Brown, David Dorsch and Grant Keyes, are the leasing brokers for the office component of the property.
