Vanila Singh, the former chief medical officer of the United States Department of Human and Health Services, was appointed to the board of directors for BioDelivery Sciences International Inc., the company announced Monday.

Singh ran for a U.S. House of Representatives seat in 2014 and is now a professor of anesthesiology, pain and peri-operative medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine.

“Having spent my clinical career and policy-making leadership focused on improving clinical outcomes through best practices and patient-centered recommendations, I am proud to extend my vision by joining BDSI’s Board and to further deliver solutions that address unmet patient care and focus on challenges that affect the healthcare system,” Singh said in a statement.

Singh is board-certified in anesthesiology and pain medicine, and received her medical degree from the George Washington University School of Medicine & Health Sciences.

Of the eight members on the board, Singh is the only female director. According to BioDelivery Sciences’ website, she is a member of the compensation committee, as well as an independent director.

BioDelivery Sciences, based in Raleigh, is a commercial-stage pharmaceutical company. Its stock was trading at $6.21 per share Monday afternoon, up 3 cents.
