Duke Energy announced its plan to partner with a startup for the electrification of its truck fleets to help reduce noise and carbon emissions.
SmartPTO, the electric power takeoff unit, allows the Duke Energy bucket truck crews to turn off their diesel engine, instead relying on electric power. The SmartPTO was developed by Viatec, a South Carolina start-up focused on green technology development.
Duke Energy said it has tested the product on a few of its bucket trucks, but soon plans to expand to 24 others. The company is considering making it required for all future bucket trucks, the company said on its Illumination site this week.
“Compared to other plug-in electrics, this unit was quieter, more responsive and much simpler in design,” said Mike Allison, Duke Energy’s director of Fleet Design and Technical Services, in an interview with Illumination. “When we saw that, we thought this is a viable path to electrifying all of our bucket truck fleet.”
The SmartPTO’s quick installment process, as well as long battery life are its main selling points, and were planned after interviews with Duke Energy employees. Its battery runs longer than the average bucket truck shift and can be charged overnight, Duke said.
“These trucks can never be down because of our product,” Viatec President and Founder Mark Ferri said in an interview with Illumination. “We have to help the industry move forward without crippling infrastructure.”
Duke Energy’s stock was trading at $96.64 per share, up $1.54 on Friday.
