Duke Energy signed an agreement with Sprint to build, own, and operate a 182-megawatt wind farm in Texas, the company announced in a press release Wednesday.

Duke also announced a 12-year virtual power purchase agreement for 173.3 megawatts of new wind energy as part of the deal.

The project will be located in Nolan County, Texas and will come online in 2020. Duke said the wind farm will generate enough renewable energy to power the equivalent of more than 54,000 homes.

“Wind power is contributing to a cleaner, stronger U.S. economy and the Maryneal Windpower project further expands our renewable energy presence in Texas,” said Rob Caldwell, president of Duke Energy Renewables.

Sprint said the pact will allow the company to significantly reduce its carbon footprint and achieve approximately 30 percent renewable energy for its electricity portfolio.

Duke Energy Renewables operates wind and solar generation facilities across the U.S. Shares of Duke Energy are at $94.04, down 22 cents.
