Duke Energy Expands Climate Strategy Goals

Duke Energy, which provides electricity to 7.7 million retail customers, updated its climate strategy with a new goal of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 on Tuesday.

Duke Energy aims to at least double its portfolio of solar, wind and other renewables by 2025 the company said in a press release.

The company also accelerated its goal of reducing carbon emissions by at least 50 percent by 2030. Duke Energy had originally targeted a 40 percent reduction in that time frame.

“A diverse mix of renewables, nuclear, natural gas, hydro and energy efficiency are all part of this vision,” said Lynn Good, Duke Energy CEO. “We’ll take advantage of economical solutions to continue that progress. In the longer-term, innovation and new technologies will be critical to a net-zero carbon future.”

Duke Energy is one of the largest energy holding companies in the U.S., and its commercial business owns and operates diverse power generation assets in North America

Shares of Duke Energy closed at $93.87 on Tuesday, up 75 cents.
