The CEO of a Morrisville-based tobacco company called President Donald Trump’s recently announced plans for a flavored e-cigarette ban “misguided and not based on scientific research.”

Pyxus International President and CEO Pieter Sikkel said that while his company recognizes the seriousness of youth access to e-liquid products, he criticized the administration’s decision to ban most non-tobacco flavored e-cigarette products.

“The fact is, e-liquids are intended only for responsible adult consumption and, like other adult products, the effort should be focused on educating and preventing underage access to all e-liquids rather than restricting the types of products legal age adults can and do enjoy today,” Sikkel said in a statement released Friday.

President Trump announced the ban as a respiratory disease associated with electronic cigarettes and other vaping devices has claimed six lives, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

The FDA announced Wednesday it intends to finalize a compliance policy for the ban in the coming weeks.

Pyxus International is an international seller and distributor of tobacco leaves and other consumer tobacco products.

Shares of Pyxus were trading at $15.14 Friday, down 21 cents.
