Nucor Corporation announced the election of former U.S. Army Lieutenant General Nadja West to the company’s board of directors in a press release Thursday.

West retired in August after 37 years with the U.S. Army, most recently serving as Surgeon General. West was the first black Army Surgeon General and the highest-ranking female to have graduated from the United States Military Academy.

In joining Nucor’s board of directors, West will become the second female board member as well as the second African-American member of the board.

“We are fortunate to have General West join the Nucor board. She brings a valuable perspective from her years of proven leadership and management in the U.S. Army, including service at the most senior levels in the U.S. Armed Forces,” said CEO John Ferriola.

Nucor is the largest American steelmaker. Shares were trading at $50.29 Friday, down 6 cents.
