Former North Carolina Central University Assistant Legal Counsel Benita N. Jones has joined Womble Bond Dickinson and the firm’s Education Law Sector Team and Labor and Employment Team. Jones has experience guiding education clients in a variety of matters including student affairs, employment, open meetings, agreements with public entities, and constitutional issues.

She represents university clients in administrative complaints before the US Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). She also guides university faculty, administrators and staff in various legal and policy issues.

In addition to her experience providing legal counsel in higher education, Jones has worked previously with a number of school districts across the state in a broad range of K-12 matters. Jones served as Chair of the North Carolina Bar Association’s Education Law Section in 2016-17.

“Having served in the university in-house counsel role, Benita acutely understands the pressures and pain points that institutions of higher education face on a daily basis,” said Liz Riley, co-leader of Womble Bond Dickinson’s Educational Law Sector Team. “Combining in-house university service with her background in K-12 work, Benita is a welcome addition to our growing team.”

In the community, Jones is a member of the Save the Children US Head Start Board of Directors and a former member of the Wake County Smart Start Board of Directors.
