Hanesbrands Inc. will lay off all 222 employees at its sock production plant in Mt. Airy, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification filed with the North Carolina Department of Commerce.

Hanesbrands stated that “the global competitive environment results in our inability to continue production at this plant.”

The plant is expected to close on Sept. 28.

Work produced at the Mt. Airy plant will transition to a plant in El Salvador. Hanesbrands has filed a petition for Trade Adjustment Assistance benefits with the U.S. Department of Labor that would provide aid to the employees affected by the closure.

That application is currently pending.

Hanesbrands stated in the WARN Act filing that its human resources team will be providing outplacement support “to the greatest extent possible” for affected employees who are not able to secure a position at another HanesBrands location.

The company made it clear that, because it is not represented by a union, no “bumping rights” are associated with this closure.

Hanesbrands stock was rose nearly 1.7 percent from $18.02 in morning trading to $18.32 at market close.
