Novant Health, a Winston-Salem based clinic and hospital network, announced a $181.4 million renovation of its Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center.

The renovations include upgrades to patient rooms, enhancements to women’s and children’s services and sustainability infrastructure. These upgrades mark the first phase of a multiyear project.

This is the first significant capital investment at the medical center since 2007.

“Our board of directors shares a sense of great excitement with Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center’s leaders and with our community stakeholders,” said Board Chair for Forsyth Medical Center Joia Johnson in a statement. “This level of investment shows the strength of Novant Health’s continued commitment toward growth and will provide significant benefits for the Winston-Salem community and surrounding areas.”

Upon completion of the first phase, about 25 percent of patient rooms at the hospital will be new or renovated.

The updates to the Women & Children’s Institute &Innovation Center have been designed to benefit mothers and families during delivery and their transition home. The company promises improved nursing care and procedural units.

Forsyth Medical Center opened in 1964 under the name Forsyth Memorial Hospital and has operated under Novant Health since 1997.

Novant Health has hospitals and clinics in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and Georgia. In March, Novant Healh purchased land in Ballantyne, North Carolina, for $154 million with the intent to build a new hospital.
