Blue Cross Blue Shield and Duke Health Create New Insurance Company

Duke University Health System and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina have filed to create Experience Health, a new health insurance company for seniors located in the Triangle.

A. Eugene Washington, president and CEO of Duke University Health System, said that Experience Health “represents a one-of-a-kind collaboration.”

Experience Health filed an application to offer Medicare Advantage plans in Alamance, Durham, Franklin, Granville, Lee, Orange, Pearson, Vance, and Wake counties.

If approved, enrollment will begin in fall 2019, with coverage starting Jan. 1, 2020.

Experience Health has established agreements with Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina to provide enrollment, claims and billing, while Duke Health providers and facilities will administer medical services.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina stated that Experience Health is committed to “developing affordable and accessible products and services.”

Patrick Conway, president and CEO of Blue Cross amd Blue Shield of North Carolina, said, “Experience Health will offer exactly that by featuring exceptional Duke Health medical care with efficient Blue Cross NC operations” to focus on their client’s unique needs.

Experience Health plans to “improve quality, lower costs, and deliver exceptional experience” by enhancing communication, using advanced data and analytics to provide care, simplifying appointments and billing, and providing “timely access” to health care professionals.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina provides health insurance to over 3.7 million members. In the 2018 fiscal year, Duke Health provided 69,000 inpatient and 2.3 million outpatient visits.
