Atlantic Veneer Co. plans to lay off 57 workers in Beaufort, North Carolina, according to a notice with the North Carolina Department of Commerce.

The affected associates are employed in veneer production occupations. Of the 57 positions in Beaufort, 42 are veneer production associates, and 10 are maintenance technicians. Four are boiler operators, and one is an engineer.

The company, which manufactures and markets plywood and veneer products, stated that the mass layoff is expected to be permanent, with all separations between affected employees and employment to be accomplished by May 14.

The company anticipates offering some affected employees the opportunity to transfer to sister company operations in Newport, North Carolina.

Atlantic Veneer says this will not affect workers employed in the clipping, sale and distribution of veneers.

The company operates as a subsidiary of Möhring Group, a company that manufactures and markets hardwood products.

North Carolina has seen just over 1,200 employees affected through WARN notices in 2019, with 525 of them stemming from Mecklenburg County, 310 of them from Durham County and 204 of them from Wake County.

Atlantic Veneer’s layoff serves as the first in Carteret County in 2019.

The notice was filed pursuant to the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act, which must be filed 60 days in advance of a plant closing that affects more than 50 employees in a 30-day period or a mass layoff of at least 500 employees or between 50 to 499 employees if they make up at least one-third of the employer’s workforce.
