Brighthouse Financial Inc., a life insurance company, announced Thursday that Chief Financial Officer Anant Bhalla has decided to part ways from the company.

The decision will be effective March 14, 2019.

Brighthouse Financial is one of the biggest providers of annuities and life insurance in the U.S. The company specializes in products designed to help people protect what they’ve earned and ensure it lasts.

Chief Operating Officer Conor Murphy was appointed to serve as interim CFO as of Wednesday, and the company will immediately begin searching for Bhalla’s successor.

Murphy has been COO since June 2018 and has overseen Brighthouse Financial’s operations, finance, accounting and product departments. He also heads strategy for the company.

Prior to his arrival at Brighthouse Financial, in 2017 Murphy was the CFO for MetLife Inc. Latin American Region. He also served as head of investor relations for MetLife and CFO for MetLife’s Europe, Middle East and Africa region and as CFO for MetLife’s Investment organization.

The company said Bhalla’s departure was not due to any matters related to its financial statements or disclosures, or accounting principles or practices. Bhalla plans to pursue new opportunities.

“Anant played a key role in our spin-off and establishment as a stand-alone public company,” said CEO Eric Steigerwalt in a statement. “We thank Anant for his contributions during this time and wish him well in his future endeavors.”

The company’s stock closed at $40.95 yesterday.
