WHY: A medical team of dozens from OrthoCarolina, Atrium Healthcare and Novant Health will depart for Honduras in May to perform approximately 50 joint (hip and knee) replacements in a country that has little access to specialty surgery. While on the ground they will also train local medical staff to prepare patients for recovery. Launched in 2017 by Dr. Bryan Springer and Dr. Walter Beaver of the OrthoCarolina Hip and Knee Center, the mission to Panama is entirely funded by donors and medical volunteers.
Two billion people across the globe have no access to medical care. The poorest people of the world account for 35% of the world’s population, yet only 3.5% percent of all major surgeries take place in those locations.Operation Walk Carolinas was founded on the principleof providing free joint replacementsof the hip and knee to patients in underserved countries who would otherwise have no access to this life-saving operation. opwalkcarolinas.org
