Advance Sports Enterprises will Lay Off About 200 Chapel Hill Employees

Advance Sports Enterprises will layoff about 200 employees from its corporate offices in Chapel Hill, according to a notice filed with the North Carolina Department of Commerce.

The possible layoffs are due to challenges in the bicycle manufacturing and retail business. The company is trying to avoid the layoffs but the “heightened possibility” made the company give appropriate notice to the Commerce Department.

The company plans to layoff 11 warehouse receiving associates, 27 warehouse production associates, multiple vice president positions in accounting, marketing, retail store operations, and more.

The company is headquartered in Philadelphia and designs, markets and sells bicycle brands through a network that reaches 80 markets around the globes.

The company operates with two different divisions, a wholesale arm, Advanced Sports, Inc., and a retail arm, Performance Bicycle. ASE owns brands such as Fujim Breezer and Tuesday cycles.

Chapel Hill-based Performance Bicycle filed for bankruptcy Nov. 19.

ASE’s layoffs will begin on our about Jan. 15, 2019, according to Triangle Business Journal.

The company does not have employees represented by a union and does not have a job bumping system.
