American Efficient Acquires Durham-based PlottWatt

Durham-based PlottWatt Inc. has been acquired by energy efficiency company American Efficient for an undisclosed amount, according to a press release.

“The cleanest and least expensive energy is energy you don’t have to consume,” said American Efficient CEO Mark Laabs in a statement. “For years, we have admired PlotWatt’s innovative tools that make energy information accessible to consumers, and we are excited to accelerate PlotWatt’s work with companies across the country to operate their facilities more efficiently.”

The acquisition will help American Efficient expansion into commercial energy services, and it will now own or operate over 200,000 locations across the U.S., Canada and New Zealand.

“By converting raw data into actionable insights, our customers can easily improve energy and process efficiency with zero capital expenditure required, ” said PlotWatt CEO Luke Fishback in a statement. “We’re excited to join the American Efficient team and to provide even more value to our customers and the grid.”

PlotWatt was founded in 2008 and is a residential and commercial energy analytics company. Its customers include restaurant brands such as Wendy’s, KFC and Dunkin Donuts.

American Efficient was founded in 2011 and run incentive programs for energy-efficient installations in 30 U.S. states. The company’s programs help reduce the need for efficient generation infrastructure.

Laabs is also the managing director of Modern Energy, an energy asset firm and is chairman of multiple corporations and nonprofits. Laabs graduated as a Robertson Scholar from UNC-Chapel Hill and Duke University.
