Transdev, a public transportation company based in Paris, France, is laying off 280 of its employees in Greensboro, according to a notice filed with the North Carolina Department of Commerce.

Of the employees being terminated, 204 of them are transit operators. The remaining 276 employees work in a variety of administrative and operations positions such as administrators, mechanics and customer service.

The affected workers will continue in their roles until their last day of work on Dec. 31.

In October, the city of Greensboro replaced Transdev as the operator of its public transportation systems. The city awarded Transdev’s competitor, Paris, France-based Groupe Keolis S.A.S. a $20 million per-year public transportation contract for three and a half years.

Groupe Keolis’ subsidiary, Keolis Transit America Inc., will begin operating Greensboro’s Transit Authority’s fixed-route bus and paratransit services starting in January 2019.

The notice said Transdev hopes the terminated employees find work with other transportation contractors, including Keolis.

“Transdev regrets the termination of the contract and any disruption that this may have caused our employees,” read the notice. “We are hopeful that all terminated employees will find work in other Transdev operations, with Keolis Transit, (the new contractor) or with other transportation contractors.”

Transdev is a public transit operator that offers several different means of transportation including rail and streetcars, buses and shuttles.

The company is based in Paris, France, but has operations in 20 countries on five continents and employs 20,000 people in North America alone.
