Wegmans Food Markets Inc. plans to bring a new grocery store to Wake Forest, North Carolina, which would be its fifth location as part of its North Carolina expansion.

The new store will be located on the Route 98 bypass, east of Capital Boulevard. Wegmans has signed a purchase agreement and is seeking approval to build an anchor store as part of a larger development by Stiles, a private real estate developer.

The store is expected to be up to 100,000 square feet, with a similar design to other new Wegmans stores. The development timeline will be announced once all necessary approvals have been completed.

Wegmans is expected to open a Raleigh site — its first North Carolina store — in 2019, just 11 miles from Wake Forest. There are also plans for a Wegmans location in Chapel Hill and two stores in Cary.

“We look forward to the day when we can greet new customers and welcome back those who have shopped with us in other areas before,” says Ralph Uttaro, Wegmans’ senior vice president of real estate, in a statement. “We’re grateful for the opportunity to bring incredible customer service, restaurant-quality prepared foods, and consistent low prices to Wake Forest in the future.”

Wegmans is a supermarket chain with stores in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland and Massachusetts. The family-owned company has 98 stores and celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2016. The company has been name one of the ‘100 Best Companies to Work For’ by Fortune magazine for 21 years, ranking second in 2018.

The company was also earned the title of “America’s Favorite Supermarket” in a consumer study by Market Force Information this year.
