GlaxoSmithKline announced plans to cut 100 positions at its Research Triangle Park location, according to a filing with the North Carolina Department of Commerce.

The company is one of the Triangle’s largest employers.

The British pharmaceutical company, headquartered in London, is cutting 650 jobs nationwide. The terminated positions include: field vice president, district sales director/manager, sales professional, administrative assistants, field business managers, finance and IT personnel, and other managerial, technical and support roles.

Four hundreds and fifty of the terminated jobs are sales jobs. GSK is also cutting 100 positions at its Philadelphia office, the News and Observer reported. Those affected were notified Wednesday, Sept. 5, and most of these employees will officially be terminated by November.

With the cuts, the company said it plans to contribute to cost savings and improve operational performance, the filing says.

“The downsizing is intended to contribute to a major cost savings and improve the operational performance within certain sections of our Commercial and Commercial support operations,” GSK said in its Worker Adjustment Retraining Notification, or WARN, letter to the North Carolina Department of Commerce.

Affected employees will receive pay and benefits during the notice period, the filing says. These employees will also be eligible for some benefits upon termination including: severance pay, subsidized health care and outplacement support.

“The planned action is permanent. Bumping rights do not exist,” the filing says. “There are no unions representing affected the employees.”

The company employs around 100,000 people in over 150 countries, the company’s website says.

So far this year, there have been seven layoffs in Durham County totaling 1,043 jobs, according to the Department of Commerce.

GSK closed at $40.30 Friday, up 43 cents, or 1.08 percent.
