The unemployment rate in North Carolina fell two-tenths of a point to 3.9 percent in August, according to data Friday from the North Carolina Department of Commerce.

The state added a total of 102,800 non-farm jobs during the month, bringing state unemployment equal to the national rate. The national unemployment rate for August, 3.9 percent, remained unchanged from July.

The highest performing industries in North Carolina were professional and business services, which added 4,900 jobs, and trade, transportation and utilities, which added 1,800.

Among the sectors that lost jobs were government, manufacturing, and education and health services.

The U.S. unemployment rate has fallen to record lows in recent months, and North Carolina is approaching a similar outcome. The lowest annual unemployment rate on record for the state is 3.2 percent, recorded in 1999.

Still, North Carolina’s current rate hovers above other states in the region. Unemployment rates for other states in the South include:

  • Georgia, 3.8
  • Virginia, 3.0
  • South Carolina, 3.4
  • Florida, 3.7
  • Tennessee, 3.6
