Publix Super Markets Inc. plans to build a new distribution center in Greensboro that will add up to 1,000 jobs to the area.

The Florida-based company is expected to invest up to $300 million in the first phase of the project.

The distribution center is part of a multiphase project that plans to create up to 1,000 jobs by 2025. The distribution center is set to be finished by 2022.

The distribution center will deliver grocery products to Publix locations in the Carolinas and Virginia.

“As a proud community supporter, Publix is excited to create hundreds of new employment opportunities and to help provide for greater economic prosperity in Guilford County,” said Publix CEO and President Todd Jones in a statement.

Positions will be available in the administrative and maintenance departments as well as the refrigerated warehouse.

The state estimates that the project will grow the state’s economy by $1.38 billion over the course of the 12-year term grant.

Publix is the largest employee-owned grocery store in the U.S. It has more than 1,200 locations, including 42 in North Carolina and 14 in Virginia. Its sales last year were $34.6 billion.

The company first opened a location in North Carolina in 2014. Its first Virginia location opened last year. The closest distribution center to those locations is in Dacula, Georgia, a northern suburb of Atlanta.
