Gildan Activewear Inc. plans to close its sock manufacturing plant in Hildebran, North Carolina, and lay off 100 workers in September, according to a filing with the North Carolina Department of Commerce.

The expected layoff date is Sept. 13.

Gildan, based in Montreal, Quebec, bought the Hildebran facility from Peds Legwear Inc. for $55 million cash.

Earlier this year, the company eliminated 65 jobs at the plant. It also closed a Massachusetts dyeing facility in 2017, laying off nearly 100 workers.

Workers at the Hildebran plant may be able to find jobs at the company’s yarn manufacturing facilities in Salisbury and Mocksville.

Hildebran is in Burke County and is part of the Hickory-Lenoir-Morganton metropolitan statistical area. The plant is located on Neuville Avenue.

The Gildan cuts are the only layoffs in Burke County in 2018.

Due to the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act, companies are required to submit WARN notices to the state Department of Commerce to announce pending layoffs.

So far in 2018, more than 7,300 North Carolina workers have lost their jobs through layoffs accounted by WARN notices.
