Mattress company Serta Simmons Bedding plans to close its manufacturing plant in Whitsett, North Carolina, and lay off 112 workers, according to a filing with the North Carolina Department of Commerce.

The first layoffs at the plant are expected to occur on Sept. 7, according to the filing. Of the workers affected, 97 are represented by the Workers United SEIU Local 2679 union.

Eighteen of the employees losing jobs are mattress assemblers, while another 14 are sewing machine operators. A dozen are truck operators and nine are material handlers.

Atlanta-based Serta Simmons also has a plant in Charlotte.

Whitsett is in Guilford County and is part of the Greensboro-Winston-Salem metropolitan statistical area. The plant is located on Judge Adams Road.

This is the second layoff in Guilford County in 2018.

Due to the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act, companies are required to submit WARN notices to the state Department of Commerce to announce pending layoffs.

So far in 2018, more than 7,300 North Carolina workers have lost their jobs through layoffs accounted by WARN notices.
