A plant technology company developing health and wellness products using hemp has raised $970,000 in a private equity offering, according to a filing Thursday with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Root Bioscience Inc. raised the money from 19 investors, according to the filing. It would like to raise a total of $2 million.

The company, which was founded in 2018, transforms phytocannabinoids such as cannabidiol into premium health and wellness products such as oils and powders using processes that combine specialized cannabis industry technology with advanced bio-manufacturing techniques.

Its lab is located in Research Triangle Park.

The company’s chief executive officer is Garrett Perdue. He previously was a managing director of a law firm and holds his bachelor’s degree and law degree from UNC-Chapel Hill.

Private companies such as Root Bioscience relying on the Rule 506 exemption do not have to register their offering of securities with the SEC, but they must file what’s known as a Form D electronically with the SEC after they first sell their securities.
