Thomas M. Moton, Jr., assistant city manager for Rocky Mount, has resigned after over three years of service to accept a similar position in Wilmington, N.C.

Moton joined the city of Rocky Mount Sept. 2014 and currently manages Human Relations, Human Resources, Parks and Recreation and Public Works and Water Resources. During his time in Rocky Mount, Moton is credited with working with neighborhood associations to address community and quality of life issues, participating in ongoing efforts to develop a Comprehensive Asset Management Program for the city of Rocky Mount’s Water and Sewer Utilities and managing and implementing the city of Rocky Mount’s efforts to establish a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Program. As a part of the program, Moton assisted with the development of a diverse workforce and an inclusive workplace capable of delivering outstanding public service to the community. He has also been heavily involved with the efforts of the Community Anti-Litter Coalition.

“Mr. Moton has made many significant contributions to the city of Rocky Mount, and while I will miss his talent, experience and enduring commitment to this community, I wish him the best in his future endeavors,” said City Manager Rochelle D. Small-Toney. “Wilmington will have a gem in their midst.”

Prior to joining the city of Rocky Mount, Moton worked as city manager of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. Moton also previously served as an assistant city manager for Greenville, N.C.

“Working for the city of Rocky Mount has been both gratifying and rewarding. I will take with me the many experiences and lessons I have learned while working here,” said Moton. “We have tremendous opportunities in this community, and I am excited to see the direction the city is headed.”

Moton’s last day with the city of Rocky Mount will be March 30, 2018. He will start as deputy city manager with the city of Wilmington April 2, 2018.
