High Point Hospital Employee Pleads Guilty To Stealing Over $3M

A former employee of High Point Regional Hospital pled guilty on Tuesday to felony charges of wire fraud, bank fraud, aggravated identity theft and embezzling an excess of $3 million from her former employer.

Kimberly Hobson, 46, of Kernersville, North Carolina, was employed within the hospital’s accounting and finance division for more than 20 years. she most recently held the title of director of finance for UNC Regional Physicians.

According to court documents, Hobson stole from the hospital over the course of 14 years beginning in January 2003, continuing until she was arrested in August of this year.

The federal indictment alleged that Hobson issued unauthorized and forged checks payable to herself and relatives. It also alleges that Hobson used credit cards for personal expenses and purchases, such as luxury vehicles, and that Hobson also used money to pay for personal credit card expenses.

She faces a maximum penalty of 32 years of confinement. As apart of her plea agreement, Hobson is required to make restitution to the hospital. Sentencing will occur in Winston-Salem on May 2, 2018.

High Point Regional Hospital released a statement saying, “High Point Regional has diligently reviewed internal controls and all financial processes within the organization. New procedures, safeguards and oversight have been implemented to minimize the risk of future fraud, theft and embezzlement.”
