Investment Advisor Defender Capital Raises $9 Million

Investment advisor Defender Capital has raised $9 million in pooled investment fund interests, according to a Wednesday filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

A portion of this money, $3.1 million, was raised in September 2016, with the remaining $5.9 million sold this week.

The filing discloses the money came from 11 separate investors.

The original $3.1 million was raised by 10 investors, also as pooled investment fund interests.

Defender Capital is an SEC registered, family-owned investment firm that manages both hedge fund and private accounts.

The Charlotte-based company is led by founder and CEO Don Stamas and founder and CIO John Stamas.

Don Stamas is a certified financial planner and chartered life underwriter, also serving on the board of the Charlotte Estate Planning Council.

Prior to founding Defender Capital, John Stamas was vice president at New York City-based Oppenheimer and Co.

Companies relying on a Reg D exemption do not have to register their offering of securities with the SEC, but they must file what’s known as a Form D electronically with the SEC after they first sell their securities.
