Extended Stay America CEO Sees 164.6 Percent Increase in Compensation

The chairman and chief executive officer of Extended Stay America Inc. saw a 164.6 percent increase in total compensation to $13.9 million in 2016, according to the company proxy filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Gerardo Lopez’s total compensation in 2015 had been $5.25 million.

Lopez’s base salary increased to $1,030,000 in 2016, up 189.2 percent from $356,164 in 2015. His stock awards reached $12 million in 2016, compared to $4.4 million in 2015.

Lopez has served as president and CEO since 2015. Prior to Extended Stay America, Lopez was the president and CEO of AMC Entertainment from 2009 to 2015.

Chief Financial Officer Jonathan Halkyard saw a 54 percent decrease in total compensation in 2016 to $1.6 million from $3.5 million in 2015. His stock awards decreased to $610,664 from $2.3 million in 2015, significantly contributing to the overall change.

Extended Stay America is the largest owner and operator of company-branded hotels in North America with 629 hotels in the U.S. and Canada.

ESH Hospitality Inc. remains a controlled company by virtue of the Extend Stay America’s ownership of its Class A shares.

Extended Stay America’s annual meeting of shareholders will be held May 17 at 8:30 a.m. in Charlotte.

The company’s stock closed Thursday at $17.02 per share, down 0.29 percent.
