A Charlotte Walmart location reported Tuesday it would close doors to its location on Independence Blvd., according to a notice required by Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act.
Opened in 2013, according to the Charlotte Observer, the Neighborhood Market store’s 89 employees displaced by the closure were notified on the day of the report’s release.
On March 3, the store will close to the public, while employees’ termination will not take effect until March 17. They will be given the opportunity to seek employment at other Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club locations. According to Walmart’s website, there are 11 other locations in Charlotte.
This announcement comes weeks before Walmart releases it fourth-quarter financial performance.
On its corporate side, Walmart has plans to terminate many other jobs — nearly 1000 — by the end of the month, according to The Wall Street Journal Tuesday.
Other grocery and retail stores are also expected to announce higher closures this year. Business Insider reported last month that along with Walmart, Kmart, Sears and Macy’s would follow this trend.
