Wilson Glass Plant to Temporarily Lay Off 150 Employees

12/20/16

Ardagh Glass, which manufactures glass packaging for food and beverage products, will temporarily lay off 150 employees at its Wilson, North Carolina plant, according to a filing in accordance Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act.

Ardagh Glass will temporarily shut down one of two furnaces at the Wilson facility for repair. This shutdown eliminates the need for most senior employees working on the tank and the remaining two production lines.

The temporary layoff was initially slated to end by March 2017, but a lack of demand and excess inventory has pushed back rehiring until January 2018, or until glass market conditions improve, according to the company.

The Wilson plant employs 290 people and primarily makes glass bottles for beer and other beverages. The company blamed a downturn in the mass beer sector for the prolonged layoffs.

The plant is a part of the North American branch of Ardagh Group, which is based in Britain and operates 110 glass and metal manufacturing facilities in 22 countries.

Last month, the company filed an F-1 announcing its intent to raise $100 million in an initial public offering. Renaissance Capital analysts predict this number is a placeholder, saying the company could raise up to $1.5 billion.

The notice was filed pursuant to the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act, which must be filed 60 days in advance of a plant closing that affects more than 50 employees in a 30-day period or a mass layoff of at least 500 employees or between 50 to 499 employees if they make up at least one-third of the employer’s workforce.

All North Carolina filings under the WARN Act can be found here.
